How do I keep it in great shape?

In general: use wooden or silicone utensils on non-stick surfaces; oil wooden boards and spoons now and then; dry cast iron right away and add a thin layer of oil; and always unplug appliances and let them cool before cleaning. Never submerge the base of an electric appliance in water.
